How to use the Sales Tax Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter your inputs

Fill in the required fields at the top of the sales tax calculator. Each input shows a default placeholder so you can see the expected format and units before you type.

  2. 2

    Adjust assumptions and options

Use the toggles, sliders and dropdowns to tailor the calculation to your situation — currency, country, time period, advanced options and any optional fields all change the result in real time.

  3. 3

    Review the result

The result card updates instantly as you type. Read the headline number, then check the breakdown, chart and any per-period schedule to understand how the inputs combined to produce the answer.

  4. 4

    Compare scenarios

Change one input at a time to see how sensitive the result is to that variable. This is how you build intuition: small changes that move the answer a lot are the levers that matter.

  5. 5

    Share or save your result

Copy the shareable link to send the exact scenario to someone else, or use your browser to print or save the page. The URL preserves every input so the recipient sees the same answer you do.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Five states have no general sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon. Some Alaska localities do charge local sales tax.
  • Tennessee has the highest combined average state + local rate at ~9.55%. Louisiana, Arkansas, and Washington also have very high combined rates.
  • Counties, cities and special districts (transportation, school) can add their own sales tax on top of the state rate, sometimes adding 2-5% extra.
  • Add: result = price × (1 + tax%). Remove (when total includes tax): pre-tax = total ÷ (1 + tax%); tax amount = total ? pre-tax.
  • It varies by state. Most states tax most goods but exempt many services. Some states (Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota) tax nearly all services.
  • Most states exempt grocery food from sales tax or apply a reduced rate. Prepared food and restaurant meals are usually fully taxed.
  • Yes — use the manual rate entry. Enter your VAT rate (e.g., 20% UK, 19% Germany, 10% Australia GST) and the calculation works the same way.
  • After the 2018 Wayfair decision, US online retailers must collect sales tax in any state where they have economic nexus. The rate is based on the buyer's shipping address.
  • In the US, you can deduct either state income tax or state sales tax (not both) on your federal return if you itemize. Use IRS tables or save receipts for major purchases.
